All Things Refereeing
So you want to be a referee
Ryde Eastwood is always looking for referees. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT REFEREEING Why should I become a referee? Referees play a vital role in Touch Football, ensuring our game is played in a fair, safe and enjoyable environment for all participants. Becoming an accredited referee is an important step in ensuring that you are equipped with the knowledge of the Rules of the game, but also the latest on-field game information, and skills to manage and create a safe and enjoyable environment for all. It is also a great way to remain fit and active and participate in our game. The skills learnt as a referee are invaluable. Being able to enforce the rules that you have been trained in is a real talent and great for your resume. AND we need referees for our competitions to run effectively. How do I initiate the process? Get in touch via the form located on the right. One of the Directors will get in touch with you to discuss how to progress your enquiry. How much do I get paid? The reimbursement for refereeing in the Junior Competitions is $15 per game, and $20 per game for the Senior Competitions (even higher if you progress to level 3); the duration of the games is usually 30 minutes. Our rates are one of the highest within NSW. Referees are also compensated for attendance at all other tournaments and gala days usually around $80 Can I play in the competition but also referee other games? Many of our referees are also players in our competition, or other competitions. Your games will be scheduled around you playing commitments. Many refs have found that their game improves as a result of refereeing through developing a better understanding of the game from both perspectives. What competitions are there? We have a number of competitions running during the year; the Junior Summer Competition runs from September through to December, whilst the Senior Summer Competition runs from October through to March. We also have a Senior Winter competition that usually runs from April to June. There are usually three timeslots for the Juniors and three timeslots for the Seniors, so depending on your fitness levels you can do up to 6 games each week of the competition. Are there any ‘out-of-pocket’ expenses to be a referee? Not really – we supply whistles and referee shirts. All you need is a pair of shorts and a pair of runners. We reimburse referees for the cost of any certification courses that you attend, after successfully passing the physical and written components to reach accreditation. Do I receive any ‘guidance or support’ whilst learning to referee? Initially, you will be assessed by one of our senior referees who will determine if you are ready to referee immediately, or require further tuition before commencing to referee competition games. This tuition will be provided by one of the Referee coached free of charge. As your expertise improves, we also encourage referees to take part in representative competitions that Ryde Eastwood participate ie Junior State Cup in February, Vawdon Cup in winter and Senior State Cup in December. There are many pre-tournaments to Junior State Cup from October to February. The coaching by senior referees and referee coaches during the representative tournaments is invaluable. |
Message from the Director of Referees at Ryde-Eastwood Hawks
We have been very fortunate over the last few years to grow the numbers and talent of our local Junior and Senior referees. We have seen many achieve accreditation to the NSW touch association, and progress to referee at representative level. Whether you wish to aspire to representative level or focus on our local competition only, you will be supported by a great team of senior referees that can be approached at any time for advice and guidance. Testimonials from current Referees “I have relished being a referee, as well as improving my fitness level, it has provided me with additional touch skills learned by refereeing higher standards of touch” – Matt "Refereeing has given me a new level of confidence and a better understanding of the game of touch. I've made some great friends along the way too" - Brandii "Refereeing is good part time job for me. I get to work and exercise at the same time. I have used the money I have earned refereeing to save up and buy some cool things I wanted. I've also liked being a part of the 'Ref's Team'. They look after you really well with support and training. " - Jack |
