The Ryde Eastwood Hawks won the Vawdon Cup third division women’s competition on Friday night against South Sydney.
After playing a draw with Souths during the season proper, we knew it was going to be a tough final. The Hawks girls rose to the challenge and played well during the Grand Final to record a 4 – 2 victory. The Hawks jumped to a 2 – 0 early lead and were able to maintain that for the majority of the first half. Their motto of defence wins Grand Finals was very true and every girls excelled in their defence. Another two tries in the second half were enough for the girls to win the title. A fitting Grand Final as both teams were strong across the park and deserved to play in the last match of the tournament. Special thanks to team coach Mark Donkin for his tireless efforts in building this squad and to his staff of Andrew Goggin, Tonia Amy and Renee Quirk. Our Club would also like to acknowledge NSWTA who were able to deliver a Vawdon Cup tournament (as a condensed version) during these difficult times. The girls will now focus their energy into playing 20s at Senior State Cup in early December. Congratulations girls! Brody Howard is the Hawks Junior Player of the Month for November.
A tough, skilful and uncompromising player, Brody has made his mark with the Hawks over the past ten years. He has been the constant for all of his coaches and allowed the Club to build teams around him. A middle or link, Brody has vision and a strong passing game to complement his tenacity in defence. Every team needs a Brody Howard and he is considered a leader on and off the field. Brody has won numerous awards over the past ten years and nominates his ‘players player’ awards as the most pleasing memories of his time with the Hawks. Combined with a strong Hawks career, Brody has also forged a career in Rugby League and attends the famous Holy Cross College, which is a strong breeding ground for our Club. As Brody’s junior career draws to a close, he has already made inroads into our senior program and has been identified by our senior coaching staff and provided opportunities to train with our Men’s Premier League squad under the guidance of Barry Gibson. One of his recent coaches Adam Nicholas said that ‘Whilst Brody is still developing his game, once he reaches his potential, he could go all the way. Players love playing alongside him and he is always giving 120% at both training and on game day’. Congratulations to Brody on being the Hawks Junior player of the month for November 2020. The Hawks Senior Player of the month for November is Grace Thomas.
When you look up the word loyalty, you will find the name Grace Thomas. Grace has been a member of the Hawks for ten consecutive Junior State Cups and started way back in Wollongong as an 8 year old when the team were runners up to Manly. Despite her slight build her strength in the middle should not be underestimated. She continues to improve and dominate in this position against much bigger opposition and is a naturally gifted player. Whilst her Junior State Cup journey has come to a close, her senior chapter is just about to commence. Grace is currently playing Vawdon Cup and will line up for the Hawks in the u/20s at Port Macquarie in December. When we spoke to Grace about some of her career highlights, she couldn’t go past all the fabulous friendships made within her teams that have been together (majority of girls) for a very long time and the passion they all have to play for the Hawks. Combined with being an outstanding touch player, Grace has excelled at the highest levels of soccer, cricket, rugby 7’s and AFL for both Club and school. The next stage of Graces professional life will see her studying Primary School teaching after finishing her HSC which is something else that she will flourish at! Her family have been constant supporters of Grace throughout her journey with Mary (mother), Peter (father) and both siblings always lending their support. Congratulations to Grace on being the Hawks Senior player of the month for November 2020. A more loyal player would be hard to find. The Bayview Hotel in Gladesville is the Hawks Sponsor of the Month for November.
The Bayview has been supporting the Hawks for over 20 years and their publican Rod is one of the greatest blokes you will ever meet. Rod’s continued generosity and commitment to our club and the local community, means that Rod and his staff are held in the highest regard by all. An iconic establishment is in the heart of Gladesville and the Bayview is a very popular hangout for the Hawks players and officials. Established in 1879 and rebuilt in 1938, the Bayview is now a place for families to attend for bistro meals and has a great atmosphere for all ages. After the families head home, the modern day music and live bands take over and this is where our players hit the dance floor (pre-COVID of course). Click on their link below to find out more details and what's on. Many thanks to the Bayview Tavern at Gladesville for their ongoing support. Please remember to support those who support us! |
